Windows ordered and cladding started

I've just noticed it's been quite a while since the last update - we have continued to work away over the last weeks on finishing the roof details, fascias and lots of other small things that have been on the 'to do' list. That list never gets shorter, no matter how much you do!

Janex Windows

So although the work has been on the small details, we've now ordered our windows, all being well they will be here mid-July.

  • Janex windows - manufactured in Norway
  • Triple Glazed
  • Timber frame
  • Alu clad
  • Sun tints on the S/E elevation to reduce over heating
  • Black spacer bar in between the panes - looks great although 95% of people will never notice them.
  • 21 openings and 25 units
  • 54m2 glass area
  • Low u-value - exceeds Building Regulations by quite a margin

Once the windows are in, we will be completely wind and water tight. We can then complete the final cladding details ready for winter.

Duraclad Cladding

We have made a start at fitting the cladding. For this we are using a wood composite; Duraclad. We had quite a dilema with the cladding - whilst we liked natural timber, with time it would weather to a silver/grey colour - this is nice, but with the grey tank walls, fascia and windows, it would all be a bit dull. We looked at Marley Weatherboard but the colours and fake timber pattern weren't setting the heather alight. We opted for Duraclad Cedar - quite a light colour, in the 250mm board, which are quite a bit wider than normal cladding. We got a great deal on this and had it delivered weeks ago but only just starting to clad. We've started the upstairs since the Protect Membrane has been exposed for quite some time not and really needing covered. The windows will be fitted from the inside - we can fit most of the cladding, except the window trims which will be completed post window install. We took a long time agonising over the cladding but it's fair to say we're both really pleased with the look.

The key difference you'll see in the pictures are the fascias and the cladding upstairs - oh, as well as the appearance of window openings upstairs!
On a Friday after work, with scorching sun, we have nothing better to do :)

Early on Saturday morning
Progressing - battens fixed through the the timber studs at matching 600ctrs, then DPM stapled to the front.

The finished product! The boards should lighten over the next month of two then remain that shade for their lifetime.
A not often seen view!

A view never seen before since we had the openings boarded until now. Arran is in the distance.
Cladding at the rear completed.
