Spring update!

I can't believe how long it's been since our last update. We have been working hard throughout winter and making good progress. As I write this on 21st March 2016, we have installed 270m2 of roffing - with only 25m2 left to go (for the terrace). 

With the first floor superstructure broadly complete, we had many small tasks - and only weekends to complete them. Timber runners for the roof beams, infill blocks, window opening flashing tape, wall plates, scaffolding to arrange....

We ordered the roof joists late in February from Pasquill in Perth (who have been brilliant to work with) and these were delivered in early March. There were nearly 80 joists all in - each one had to be carried up to the house by hand. 140 sheets of OSB - all carried by hand. 

By weekend of 12/13th, we were ready to put the roof on Tank 3 - weather was clear. This one was fairly easy at it comprised 26 joists which were all the same size at 600ctrs. Firstly, we had to lift the joists into position, space them and nail in with truss clips - in hindsight we would have hired a positive placement nail gun, but heyho...

Then we had to fit the T&G OSB boards, all 65 of them. This task was made much easier with a Paslode IM350 - nails in at 100ctrs meant over 1500 nails. Once that was done, we had to apply a really sticker primer for the Elotene VCL we are using - this stuff was horrendous, but we applied fairly quickly. Lastly, we then applied the self adhesive vapour control membrane (Elotene DSN), which provided a VCL, but also a temporary waterproof layer. 

The following weekend, we repeated on the other side, with the added complication of the openings for the rooflights.

We still have a lot of work do to on the roof - next we need to adhere the insulation (150mm Kingspan TR27) to the VCL, them adhere the EPDM rubber membrane to that. But we need some warmer weather for that - and a chance to recover from all the heavy lifting!
